Rising global population, urbanization, and rapid industrialization cause increasing demand for raw materials. These key global concerns trigger initiative to find alternative materials which economically effective and supportive to sustainable development for greener and cleaner environment.

My research interests are on air pollution and solid waste management. By developing integrated solid waste management which emphasizes principle of reduce, reuse, and recycle and applying these principles, not only secondary raw materials can be supplied to industry, but also employment is generated, littering is reduced, the lifespan of the local landfill is prolonged, resources and energy are conserved, pollution is abated, aesthetic value is maintained, and the overall flow of waste is reduced.

Besides research, I am currently served as head of Environmental Engineering Laboratory, Civil Engineering Department, University of Indonesia and teach courses such as air pollution, waste to energy, emission control, and environmental chemistry. My research and teaching experiences also lead to my active participation in developing environmental awareness in the community.

Since the very beginning of my carrier as lecturer, the area of pavement engineering and traffic engineering has been becoming a road path at the university where I work with. Transportation engineering and planning are the major research interest. Most of the research area in the field of pavement undertaken are related with highway materials to find the most suitable and compromised with the specific condition in Indonesia. As the fact, climate and water are the significant contributor to the early deterioration of the flexible pavement. Later there were problem with heavy loading or overloading creating more complex condition to pavement performance. In the area of traffic engineering, research were focused on traffic management and pedestrian facilities. Pedestrian is the most vulnerable amongst traffic component, and at the same time walking and pedestrian are human daily activity. All travel mode always started and followed by walking. They need to facilitate to a better level of service. Some of the research undertaken are related with the characteristic of pedestrian and facility need to be provided

As part of civil engineering structures, bridges and buildings are present in all cities and villages in Indonesia. During its operational time, those structures will be subjected to different kind of loads such as dead weight, live load and some of environmental loads such as earthquake, wind load, inundation, fire etc. Problems on those elements may come during construction or operational period. Facing to those different kinds of loadings, the life time of a building will depend very much on how the building is maintained. A not well maintained building or bridge will endanger and give burden to the public that uses those structures and lives around them. Elements or parts in those structures are important. A problem caused by one of the loads on one part of those structures cannot be ignored and should be investigated, and repaired immediately if necessary. In conjunction to one of research focus of Universitas Indonesia which is related find solution to the problem of environment and to the public life; the Civil Engineering Study Program of Universitas Indonesia has put its vision to the same mentioned sense. The vision for Civil Engineering Study Program is to be preeminent in creating environmentally-conscious and globally oriented engineering solutions for civil infrastructure. The vision and above situation have brought most of staffs in Civil Engineering Department of Universitas Indonesia that are majoring in structure domain to do their study or research on behavior of structures, civil engineering and green materials. Until now studies on concrete materials, bridge elements, buildings elements, and green materials are my area of research interest.

At current situation I am one of the members of safety committee for bridges structures at the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing.

In educational domain, I teach Static, Design of Steel Structures and Bridge Engineering. I also actively involve as a jury member in Ministry of Research and Higher Education’s National Bridge Competition for civil engineering students in Indonesia.
